Cloudflare, the internet infrastructure company, has taken a bold step in the rapidly evolving AI landscape by blocking an astounding 416 billion AI bot requests since July 1, 2025. The move, announced by CEO Matthew Prince at WIRED’s Big Interview in San Francisco, reflects the company’s growing focus on protecting content creators and reshaping the online business model in the age of generative AI.


As AI tools powered by large language models continue to scrape massive amounts of web data, content creators face a new challenge: how to safeguard their work while still being discoverable online. Prince emphasized that Cloudflare’s recent initiative, dubbed “Content Independence Day,” allows publishers and creators to block AI crawlers by default unless AI companies pay for access. Since its launch in July 2024, this initiative has given website owners the tools to control how their content is used, leading to a significant reduction in unauthorized AI scraping.


“The internet’s business model has always revolved around generating content that drives traffic and monetizing it through ads, subscriptions, or sales,” Prince explained. “What many people don’t fully understand is that AI represents a platform shift. The business model of the internet is about to change dramatically, and figuring out what comes next is consuming almost all of my waking hours.”


Cloudflare’s core mission has long been to make online content faster, safer, and more reliable. However, with the surge of AI-driven services, Prince says the company is now focusing on preventing market consolidation and ensuring a level playing field for businesses of all sizes. A particular area of concern for Prince is Google’s combined approach to search and AI crawling. Unlike other AI companies, Google merges its search and AI crawlers, meaning that blocking AI scraping also blocks a site from appearing in Google search results. This creates a dilemma for content creators: they want to prevent AI models from training on their work, yet they rely on search visibility to reach audiences.


“You can’t opt out of one without opting out of both, which is a real challenge—it’s crazy,” Prince noted. “It shouldn’t be possible to use yesterday’s monopoly to leverage a monopoly position in tomorrow’s market.”


Prince shared previously unreleased statistics highlighting Google’s disproportionate access to web content compared to other AI companies. Cloudflare’s data shows that Google can see 3.2 times more web pages than OpenAI, 4.6 times more than Microsoft, and 4.8 times more than Anthropic or Meta. In Prince’s words, Google enjoys “incredibly privileged access” to the internet, underscoring the need for careful regulation and control of AI data harvesting.


Encouragingly, publishers who have blocked AI crawlers are already seeing positive outcomes. Prince emphasized the ongoing value of original human creativity, from local news reporting to niche online communities. These unique insights remain highly valuable to AI companies seeking to expand their models, creating opportunities for licensing agreements and other paid content strategies.
