Full Digitalization of EPZA No Longer Optional, Says SAPM Haroon Akhtar

Security, Fire Safety, and Technology Key to Export Growth

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) Haroon Akhtar Khan has stated that the complete digitalization of the Export Processing Zones Authority (EPZA) is now inevitable to improve performance, transparency, and efficiency. He emphasized that strengthening security arrangements and fire preparedness across all export processing zones is equally critical to ensure investor confidence.

SAPM Chairs High-Level EPZA Review Meeting

The remarks were made during a high-level meeting chaired by the SAPM with EPZA Board Members and Chief Executive Officer Freedon Akram Sheikh. The meeting focused on identifying operational challenges faced by EPZA and outlining a clear roadmap for future reforms.

Haroon Akhtar Khan stressed that immediate performance improvement is essential if EPZA is to meet national economic goals. Aligning with the vision of Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, he said EPZA must play a central role in boosting Pakistan’s export potential.

Digitalization to End Red Tape and Improve Ease of Business

Highlighting the importance of technology, the SAPM said that performance enhancement is impossible without full digital transformation.
“Digitalization will remove bureaucratic hurdles and ensure efficiency, transparency, and ease of doing business,” he said, directing that EPZA operations be shifted entirely to a digital platform.

Focus on Credibility, Exports, and Growth

Haroon Akhtar Khan urged the EPZA Board and management to work together to restore the institution’s credibility and reputation. He reiterated that facilitating exports remains the government’s top priority.

Target Set to Double EPZA Exports

Concluding the meeting, the SAPM called for concerted efforts to double EPZA’s exports within the current year, underscoring the government’s strong commitment to export-led economic growth.
