Pakistan to Establish Digital Economy Council to Strengthen Online Business and Tech Sector

Pakistan is preparing to launch its first-ever Pakistan Council of Digital Economy, a major initiative aimed at accelerating growth in the country’s online business and technology sector. The move marks a significant step toward building a structured and collaborative digital ecosystem by formally connecting private digital companies with government institutions.

The council is being developed under the leadership of the Pakistan Digital Authority (PDA), which operates under the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication. As part of the groundwork, the PDA has already held consultations with more than 40 leading private digital companies, reflecting strong industry interest and participation in shaping the initiative.

Designed to function in a manner similar to a chamber of commerce, the Digital Economy Council will provide an official platform for dialogue between policymakers and digital businesses. Its primary role will be to offer recommendations on online business regulations, digital taxation, policy frameworks, and market challenges, ensuring that private-sector perspectives are included in national decision-making.

Government officials say the council will help streamline policies affecting e-commerce, fintech, software services, startups, and other digital enterprises. By improving coordination between regulators and businesses, the council aims to reduce regulatory uncertainty and encourage both local and foreign investment in Pakistan’s digital economy.
