The Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecom, chaired by Senator Palwasha Khan, convened on Tuesday to review recent increases in mobile and internet package rates in Pakistan. The meeting also focused on preparations for the country’s upcoming 5G spectrum auction.
Officials Address Concerns Over Mobile and Internet Pricing
During the session, Federal Minister Shaza Fatima responded to social media reports highlighting concerns about rising mobile and internet costs. She emphasized that, despite recent price adjustments, Pakistan continues to offer some of the most affordable mobile internet rates globally. The minister reassured the committee that, overall, internet packages in Pakistan remain cost-effective when compared to international standards.
Preparations Underway for 5G Spectrum Auction
The committee also discussed the upcoming 5G spectrum auction, which Minister Fatima said is expected to take approximately two months to complete. She highlighted that the government is working to finalize the auction to boost digital connectivity and expand high-speed mobile services across the country.
PTA Chairman added that the current most affordable internet package is priced at Rs. 147, noting that he personally uses the Jazz Gold Value package. Both officials emphasized their commitment to fair telecom pricing while supporting the rollout of next-generation 5G services.
Public Attention on Affordability and Quality
The discussion reflects growing public interest in mobile and internet affordability, particularly as users compare local rates with global benchmarks. With the introduction of 5G on the horizon, consumers are keenly observing how the new technology may affect data prices, service quality, and network performance.
Next Steps for Digital Connectivity in Pakistan
The committee highlighted the need for transparent pricing policies and continued monitoring to ensure that mobile and internet services remain affordable for all users. The successful launch of 5G is expected to redefine mobile internet speeds and enhance digital services nationwide.
