Asgard Unveils Ultra-High-Capacity 256GB DDR5 Memory Kit as DDR5 Prices Skyrocket
Asgard has introduced two massive DDR5 memory kits aimed at mainstream PC users, but the pricing has left the tech community stunned. With global DRAM shortages worsening and demand surging because of the AI boom, DDR5 memory prices have climbed to levels higher than many top-tier GPUs — and Asgard’s latest launch proves it.
The Chinese manufacturer has released a 192GB “Thor” DDR5 kit and a 256GB “Valkyrie” DDR5 kit, featuring 4×48GB and 4×64GB modules, respectively. Both kits are now available on JD.com, but the cost is far from budget-friendly. The 192GB Thor kit is listed at 8,599 Yuan (around $1,216), which is already steep yet still reasonable when compared to the 256GB option.
The 256GB Valkyrie kit initially launched at 14,599 Yuan ($2,064), but Asgard has since raised the price to a massive 16,999 Yuan — roughly $2,404. For perspective, that’s over $400 more than the MSRP of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 Founders Edition, highlighting just how inflated DDR5 pricing has become.
Both memory kits are built using SK Hynix M-die chips. The Thor kit delivers 6000 MT/s speeds with tight CL28-36-36-72 timings, while the Valkyrie version offers the same speed but slightly looser CL32-45-45-90 timings due to its higher density.
Just months ago, high-capacity DDR5 kits like these could be found for under $1,000. However, AI-driven chip demand and supply constraints have drastically changed the landscape. Industry analysts predict that elevated DRAM prices may continue until late 2027 and could spike even further by mid-2026. With companies like Micron shifting focus away from consumer DRAM, the pressure now rests on the remaining memory manufacturers to stabilize supply and pricing.
