PTA Launches Nationwide Crackdown on Illegal LoRaWAN IoT Devices in Pakistan

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has initiated a widespread enforcement drive targeting illegal LoRaWAN devices and unauthorized IoT networks across the country. The campaign follows the authority’s recent announcement declaring all unlicensed LoRaWAN operations unlawful due to rising security and spectrum-interference concerns.

LoRaWAN, a long-range and low-power wireless communication protocol, is popular for connecting IoT devices over extended distances. While widely used in smart farming, industrial automation, smart metering and vehicle tracking, PTA warns that uncertified LoRaWAN systems can disrupt Pakistan’s national radio spectrum. According to officials, this interference poses significant risks to sensitive communication channels and could hinder ongoing digital transformation projects nationwide.

During the crackdown, enforcement teams have sealed multiple offices, confiscated illegal devices and made several arrests. PTA emphasized that companies and individuals importing, selling or deploying LoRaWAN equipment without proper authorization will face strict legal action. The regulator added that only certified and licensed IoT devices ensure secure, stable and compliant connectivity for large-scale digital initiatives.

To safeguard Pakistan’s expanding IoT ecosystem, PTA has urged the public to avoid purchasing unapproved LoRaWAN equipment. Citizens are encouraged to buy only from PTA-authorized vendors and to report any illegal imports, sales or installations linked to IoT devices.

While the technology itself remains essential for modern industries, PTA reiterated that adherence to licensing requirements is crucial for maintaining security and preventing service disruption. Approved LoRaWAN devices, the authority said, will help ensure uninterrupted and safe IoT operations as Pakistan continues to advance toward a digitally connected future.
