ECP Refuses to Recognise Gohar Ali Khan as PTI Chairman Amid Intra-Party Dispute

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has officially declined to recognise Barrister Gohar Ali Khan as the chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), adding another layer to the party’s ongoing legal and organisational challenges. The commission also rejected his request to induct independent senators into PTI, stating he currently holds no legal authority within the party structure.

According to the ECP, Barrister Gohar submitted a request seeking formal approval to admit several independent senators as PTI members. He also asked the commission to validate his position as the party’s chairman. However, the ECP clarified in a written response that Gohar cannot be recognised as PTI’s head because the party’s intra-party elections are still under judicial review.

The ECP further explained that the Lahore High Court has issued a stay order, preventing the recognition of any individual as PTI chairman until the intra-party election case is resolved. As a result, the commission maintains it cannot grant Gohar any legal status or authority regarding party membership decisions.

Barrister Gohar confirmed receiving the ECP’s reply and stated that he plans to challenge the decision in court. He also noted that the commission has not yet verified PTI’s internal elections or issued an official certificate confirming the results.

Addressing rumours about a potential ban on PTI, Gohar dismissed such speculation, questioning the legal reasoning behind it. He argued that if the ECP does not consider PTI a registered party, then any talk of banning it lacks constitutional basis.
