Government Forms National Cybersecurity Committee to Tackle Growing Digital Threats
Amid rising cyber threats targeting public sector systems, the federal government has constituted the National Committee on Information and Communication Security to strengthen Pakistan’s cybersecurity posture and protect critical digital infrastructure.
According to an official notification, the newly formed committee will conduct a comprehensive review of government information systems and identify cybersecurity vulnerabilities across federal ministries and public sector organizations. The initiative aims to assess existing weaknesses, carry out information security gap analyses, and recommend corrective actions to reduce cyber risks and improve system resilience.
A key responsibility of the committee will be to enhance the effectiveness of Pakistan’s national cybersecurity framework. It will monitor the implementation of information security measures within government institutions and ensure that cybersecurity policies are consistently enforced. Particular attention will be given to critical sectors such as health, energy, aviation, and transport, where detailed cybersecurity assessments will be conducted due to their strategic importance and exposure to cyber threats.
In addition to technical safeguards, the committee will propose improvements in technical controls across government IT systems and recommend reforms related to human resource capacity in cybersecurity. It will also ensure that cybersecurity requirements are integrated into the procurement process for IT and digital systems to prevent vulnerabilities at the acquisition stage.
The National Committee will be chaired by the Secretary of IT and Telecommunication. Its members include the Chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), representatives from the National Telecom and Information Security Board (NTISB), relevant security agencies, the Director General of National CERT, and representatives from Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
Under the National CERT framework, a Federal CERT will also be established to improve incident response and coordination. The committee will submit quarterly progress reports as part of the government’s broader effort to enhance national cyber preparedness and secure public sector digital infrastructure.
