Trump Sparks Controversy With Post on Rob Reiner’s Death, Citing ‘Trump Derangement Syndrome’
President Donald Trump drew widespread criticism after posting a controversial message following the reported death of Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, over the weekend. Authorities are investigating the deaths as a possible homicide, and the couple’s 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, has been arrested in connection with the case.
Reiner, 78, was a well-known filmmaker and actor, widely recognized for his outspoken support of the Democratic Party and his long-standing criticism of Trump. His death prompted an outpouring of tributes from across the entertainment and political worlds.
In a post shared Monday morning on Truth Social, Trump referred to the tragedy while sharply criticizing Reiner’s political views. Trump claimed the director suffered from what he described as “Trump Derangement Syndrome,” a phrase he has frequently used to dismiss critics. He characterized Reiner as a once-talented filmmaker whose “raging obsession” with Trump allegedly defined his later years.
Trump’s message concluded with a brief expression of condolence, stating, “May Rob and Michele rest in peace!” The tone and language of the post quickly sparked backlash, with critics accusing Trump of politicizing a family tragedy.
Tributes honoring Reiner continued to pour in Sunday night and Monday. Former President Barack Obama praised Reiner’s legacy, highlighting his belief in the goodness of people and his lifelong commitment to social causes through storytelling and activism.
The Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed it responded to a medical emergency call at the couple’s home around 3:40 p.m. local time on Sunday, where both individuals were found deceased.
Nick Reiner has previously spoken publicly about struggles with addiction, a journey that inspired the 2016 film Being Charlie, which he worked on alongside his father.
Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia also weighed in, criticizing Trump’s remarks. In a post on X, she described the situation as “a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies,” urging restraint and compassion amid the investigation.
