OpenAI Launches ChatGPT App Store, Turning Chatbot Into Full Platform

OpenAI has officially launched a ChatGPT App Store, marking a significant step toward transforming ChatGPT from a simple chatbot into a comprehensive digital platform. The new App Directory allows users to browse and access various tools and services directly within the chat interface, making it easier to accomplish tasks without leaving ChatGPT.

Alongside the App Store, OpenAI has released its software development kit (SDK) to developers. This enables third-party developers to build interactive apps and experiences that function natively inside ChatGPT. CEO Sam Altman has long hinted at turning ChatGPT into an “everything app,” and this move brings that vision closer to reality. The goal is to create a platform where communication, productivity, entertainment, and services coexist in one space.

As part of the update, OpenAI has renamed features previously called “connectors” to apps for clarity. Chat connectors are now apps with file search, deep research connectors are apps with deep research, and synced connectors are apps with sync. These apps allow users to pull data from external services such as Google Drive and Dropbox, with some apps optionally using ChatGPT Memory to enhance interactions.

Interactive apps are a major highlight of the new store. Spotify lets users explore music and get recommendations, now available in more regions including the UK and parts of Europe. Apple Music allows playlist creation and library management, while DoorDash can turn recipes or meal ideas into food orders directly from the chat.

While OpenAI has not detailed how it will monetize the app store, it is exploring options including digital goods. For now, the focus is on expansion, experimentation, and building a robust ecosystem where developers and users can interact seamlessly.

The ChatGPT App Store represents a major evolution, signaling a future where one app could connect nearly every service users need, all powered by AI.
