Gaming PC With an NES-Style Design Packs a Ryzen AI 9 CPU

A new retro-inspired mini PC is bringing modern performance to a classic console look. Chinese device maker Acemagic has teased the Retro X5, a compact PC housed in a chassis that closely resembles the iconic Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)—but powered by AMD’s latest high-end silicon.

Acemagic Retro X5 Combines Classic Design With Modern Hardware

Images shared on Acemagic’s blog and social channels reveal a mini PC clearly inspired by retro consoles, similar to designs previously popularized by Ayaneo. Despite its nostalgic appearance, the Retro X5 is built for modern workloads and gaming.

At its core is the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370, a powerful processor featuring 12 cores and 24 threads, including 4 Zen 5 performance cores and 8 Zen 5c efficiency cores. Boost clocks reach up to 5.1GHz, making it one of the most capable CPUs ever placed in a mini PC.

Radeon 890M iGPU and AI Performance

Graphics are handled by the Radeon 890M iGPU, based on RDNA 3+, with 16 compute units running at up to 2.9GHz. This should deliver strong 1080p and light 1440p gaming performance, potentially outperforming handheld gaming PCs like the Steam Deck when thermal limits are less restrictive.

The chip also includes an XDNA 2 NPU rated at 50 TOPS, enabling AI acceleration for productivity, media, and future AI-powered applications.

Ports, Expandability, and RetroPlay Box Software

From the available images, the front panel includes USB-C, two USB-A ports, a 3.5mm audio jack, and a power button. Acemagic confirms support for expandable memory and storage, multiple display outputs, and high-speed connectivity—suggesting a well-rounded I/O selection.

Acemagic also teased a custom launcher called RetroPlay Box, which may run on Windows 11 or potentially a Linux-based OS like SteamOS or Batocera, aimed at simplifying classic and PC gaming.

Riding the Retro Gaming Wave

With growing interest in retro aesthetics and alternative PC gaming platforms, the Acemagic Retro X5 could appeal to gamers looking for a compact, stylish, and powerful all-round system that blends nostalgia with next-generation performance.
